Open Email Links with Gmail in Firefox

Authors list

In most web browsers, clicking on an email address link on a website will trigger a client like Outlook or Entourage to open, instead of your Brown Google email account.  You can configure your browser to use your Brown Google Mail instead.

Firefox is a free browser available at firefox.com.

These instructions are for Firefox 6 and above.  You can check your version by choosing About Mozilla Firefox from the Help menu.

  1. First, we need to go into Firefox's settings.
On a Mac: From the Firefox menu, choose Preferences.
On a PC: Open Firefox’s Options menu and go to the orange Firefox button, then Options->Options (in older versions of Firefox, go to the Tools menu then Options instead) - see below.

  2. In this settings box, go to the Applications tab, scroll down and find “mailto” under Content Type, and select “Use Gmail” in the dropdown menu under Action. Click Ok to accept the change.

  3. More information is avaialable in the Firefox support article Change the Program Used to Open Email Links.
