Brown's contract for Bitdefender Endpoint Security expired in October 2023. The Office of Information Technology has uninstalled Bitdefender from all University-owned equipment.
If you have this software present on your computer, please follow these instructions to uninstall it. For these machines, you may wish to install a personal antivirus solution.
The commercial "free antivirus for Mac" landscape has changed in recent years, such that a full-featured, ad-free, no-costAV solution is not available for modern versions of macOS. For full, real-time protection of a personally-owned device, paid subscription-based solutions are best.
- Bitdefender AntiVirus for Mac is recommended as a paid solution for personally-owned Macs running macOS 13 Monterey and later.
- Bitdefender Free Antivirus scanner for Mac is a good solution for ad-hoc scanning, but does not offer real-time protection.
The University has transitioned to Crowdstrike for Brown-owned Macs, which are enrolled in computer management systems by University policy. If you have a Brown-owned computer, you do not need to take action.
