Bitdefender Antivirus for macOS

Authors list

Brown's contract for Bitdefender Endpoint Security expired in October 2023. The Office of Information Technology has uninstalled Bitdefender from all University-owned equipment.

If you have this software present on your computer, please follow these instructions to uninstall it. For these machines, you may wish to install a personal antivirus solution.

The commercial "free antivirus for Mac" landscape has changed in recent years, such that a full-featured, ad-free, no-costAV solution is not available for modern versions of macOS. For full, real-time protection of a personally-owned device, paid subscription-based solutions are best.

The University has transitioned to Crowdstrike for Brown-owned Macs, which are enrolled in computer management systems by University policy.  If you have a Brown-owned computer, you do not need to take action.

For more information about Brown's general antivirus recommendations, please read details in our article Protect Your Computer Against Viruses and Malware.
