Product Description Use at Brown

Tableau Public

Develop  visualizations to share on a website

This free desktop product allows the user to develop and publish interactive data visualizations to the Tableau Public server and embed on a website. All work is saved and published to the Tableau Public web servers and owned by Tableau—nothing is saved locally on your computer.

Features include:

  • support for data sets up to 10 million rows
  • Storage limit of 10 GB
  • The ability to limit downloading of files from Tableau Public

Free to anyone. If you want to get stared with Tableau and can share your visualizations publicly, this is a great option.

Tableau Desktop

Develop interactive visualizations with private data

This is a licensed desktop product that enables the user to develop data visualizations. Visualizations may be shared with others via publishing to Tableau Server (to share within the the organization) or Tableau Public Premium (to share publicly on the web) or may be shared with individuals to view in Tableau Reader. Full-time students are eligible for free desktop licenses, as are instructors who use Tableau Desktop in their teaching. (Follow the links in the previous sentence to request your license.) Brown owns a limited number of Tableau Desktop licenses that are used by analysts and researchers across the University.

Tableau Reader

Tableau Reader is a free desktop application that a user can use to open, view, and interact with visualizations built in Tableau Desktop.

Tableau Server

Share data visualizations within the organization

This product allows organizations to share data visualizations created with Tableau Desktop centrally with specific authorized users or groups of users within the organization.

CIS makes Tableau Server available for secure sharing of Tableau content within the university community. Along with Cognos Analytics, Tableau Server is one of Brown's two enterprise business intelligence platforms.

Tableau Online

This is a hosted version of Tableau Server. Not used by Brown
